Duccio di BuoninsegnaMaestà del Duomo di Siena, 1308-1311Tempera and gold on wood214 cm x 426 cmMuseo dell’Opera Metropolitana del Duomo, Siena
Duccio is an important representative of the Sienese school of painting between the 13th and 15th centuries. La Maestà is the altarpiece of the Cathedral of Siena. In its original form the altarpiece was composed of many other panels (predelle). It was disassembled in 1711—due to the changing tastes in religious art— and cut into portions; some portions were lost, but the remaining panels are scattered all over the world.
